Young Martyr of Courage and Loyalty to Christ
1913–1928
St. José Sánchez del Río was a young boy from Mexico who lived during the time of the Cristero War, when Catholics were persecuted for their faith.
Though very young, José desired to defend his faith and joined the Cristeros, not as a fighter, but as a helper. He showed great courage and love for Christ from an early age.
He was captured by soldiers and ordered to deny his faith. Despite threats and suffering, he refused to abandon Christ.
Even in his final moments, he proclaimed, “Viva Cristo Rey!” (Long live Christ the King). His martyrdom became a powerful witness of faith and courage.
José remained fearless in the face of death. He teaches us to stand strong in our faith.
He refused to deny Christ. His life reminds us to remain loyal to God in all circumstances.
His love for Jesus was greater than fear. St. José shows us how to put God first in everything.
St. José Sánchez del Río reminds us that holiness is possible at any age. His life shows that even the young can have deep faith and courage.
His witness challenges us to remain faithful, especially when it is difficult or unpopular.
He encourages us to love Christ above all, to stand firm in truth, and to trust God in every situation.
“St. José Sánchez del Río, help me to remain faithful and courageous in my love for Christ.”
