Priest, Servant of the Poor, and Apostle of Mercy
1845 – 1920
St. Zygmunt Gorazdowski was born in 1845 in what is now Ukraine. From an early age, he experienced poor health, yet his physical weakness never stopped him from responding generously to God’s call. He pursued his studies for the priesthood with perseverance and was ordained a priest despite many personal difficulties.
As a diocesan priest, Fr. Zygmunt became deeply known for his compassion toward the poor, the abandoned, the sick, and those on the margins of society. He did not see charity as an occasional act, but as a daily expression of Christ’s love. He visited people in need, helped the homeless, cared for the elderly, and worked to provide practical support for children, workers, and struggling families.
His ministry was marked by both tenderness and action. He founded charitable institutions, shelters, and homes for those who had nowhere else to go. He also established the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph to continue works of mercy, especially among the poor and vulnerable. Through this community, his mission of active Christian love continued well beyond his own lifetime.
St. Zygmunt was not only a man of service, but also a deeply prayerful priest. His works flowed from his love for Christ in the Eucharist and his faithful devotion to priestly ministry. He remained humble, generous, and spiritually grounded until his death in 1920. The Church remembers him as a priest whose holiness was revealed through mercy lived in concrete and courageous ways.
St. Zygmunt teaches us to see Christ in the poor, the sick, and the forgotten. His life reminds us that true love becomes visible when it serves real human needs.
Despite fragile health, he continued to serve with faithfulness. He shows us that holiness does not require perfect strength, but a willing heart that keeps saying yes to God.
His ministry flowed from prayer, sacramental life, and deep union with Christ. He reminds us that lasting service is sustained by a life rooted in God.
The legacy of St. Zygmunt Gorazdowski lives on in the countless acts of mercy inspired by his example. His life shows that holiness is not only found in preaching or public recognition, but also in caring for the overlooked, building spaces of refuge, and restoring dignity to those in need.
Through the Sisters of St. Joseph and the charitable mission he began, his work continues in the Church as a witness to active love. He remains a powerful example for priests, religious, and lay Catholics who desire to unite prayer with practical service.
St. Zygmunt’s life invites us to ask a simple but demanding question: how can we become instruments of God’s mercy in the place where we live? His answer was clear: begin with love, stay close to Christ, and serve those who are most in need.
“Lord, make me attentive to the poor, faithful in service, and generous in love.”
