St. Óscar Romero

Bishop, Martyr, and Voice for the Poor

1917–1980

Who Was St. Óscar Romero?

St. Óscar Romero was a Catholic archbishop of San Salvador in El Salvador. He lived during a time of violence, poverty, and political conflict, when many people suffered injustice and fear.

At first, many considered him quiet and cautious. But as he witnessed the suffering of the poor and the persecution of the Church, his voice became stronger and clearer. He began to speak openly against violence, oppression, and the abuse of human dignity.

Through his homilies and radio broadcasts, Archbishop Romero encouraged the faithful to remain close to Christ and to defend the dignity of every person. He became a voice for those who had no voice, especially the poor, the persecuted, and the forgotten.

He did not preach hatred or revenge. Instead, he called people to conversion, justice, mercy, and peace rooted in the Gospel.

On March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass, he was assassinated. His martyrdom became a powerful witness that love for Christ and love for the suffering cannot be separated.
