Missionary Apostle of Sri Lanka
1651–1711
St. Joseph Vaz was born in Goa, India, and became a priest filled with missionary zeal and deep love for souls. At a time when Catholics in Sri Lanka were persecuted and deprived of priests, he felt called to bring the sacraments and the Gospel to those in need.
Disguised and traveling in secret, he entered Sri Lanka and began ministering to the faithful. He endured great hardship, danger, and isolation, yet remained steadfast in his mission. He celebrated Mass in secret, heard confessions, baptized, and strengthened the faith of the people.
Despite persecution, St. Joseph Vaz’s holiness and compassion eventually earned respect, even among those outside the Church. He cared for the sick during epidemics and served people regardless of status or religion.
He is remembered as the Apostle of Sri Lanka, a tireless missionary who brought hope, faith, and the presence of Christ to a suffering Church. His life reflects courage, humility, and total dedication to God’s will.
St. Joseph Vaz was willing to risk everything to bring Christ to others. He teaches us to share our faith boldly and lovingly.
Even in danger and hardship, he remained faithful. His life reminds us to stay committed to God’s call no matter the difficulty.
He cared for the sick and the poor without discrimination. St. Joseph Vaz shows us how to love others through selfless service.
St. Joseph Vaz reminds us that the Gospel is meant to be shared, even in the most difficult circumstances. His life shows that faith is not meant to remain hidden, but to be lived courageously for the good of others.
His witness is especially meaningful in times of persecution or spiritual dryness. He trusted that God was at work even when results were unseen, and he remained faithful to his mission.
He encourages us to bring Christ into our everyday encounters, to serve with love, and to trust that God can use even small acts of faith to transform lives.
“St. Joseph Vaz, help me to share my faith with courage and serve others with love.”
