St. John Eudes

Priest, Missionary, and Apostle of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

1601–1680

A Heart Formed for Mission

St. John Eudes lived in a time when many people knew the faith but did not always live it deeply. Parish life could be weak, preaching sometimes lacked clarity, and many people carried wounds that had not been met with patience or care. Into this reality stepped a priest with a clear conviction: if hearts are not formed, everything else remains fragile.

Born in France in 1601, John grew up in a family that valued faith and integrity. From a young age, he showed a serious spirit and a desire to give himself to God. He eventually entered religious life and was ordained a priest. Very quickly, he discovered his calling as a preacher and missionary, traveling from parish to parish to renew the faith of ordinary people.

His preaching was not abstract. He spoke about repentance, mercy, and the love of Christ in a way people could understand. He called people back to confession, to prayer, and to a more sincere Christian life. At the same time, he knew that harshness would not heal hearts. He balanced truth with compassion, conviction with patience.

One of the defining aspects of his life was his devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Long before these devotions became widely known, John Eudes promoted them as a way to understand the love of God more personally. He taught that the Heart of Jesus represents divine love poured out for humanity, and the Heart of Mary reflects a human heart perfectly united with God.

For him, these were not only devotions. They were a way of living. To honor the Heart of Jesus meant to receive His love and then give it to others. To honor the Heart of Mary meant to learn humility, purity, and faithful trust.

He also recognized that renewal in the Church required well-formed priests. Because of this, he founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, often called the Eudists, to train priests with strong spiritual foundations and pastoral sensitivity. He believed that priests should not only know theology, but also know how to guide souls with wisdom and love.

In addition, he founded the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity, a community dedicated to helping women who were struggling or marginalized. This work showed his concern for people who were often ignored or judged by society. He did not turn away from difficult situations. He stepped into them with compassion.

His life was full of activity, preaching, organizing, founding communities, and guiding others. Yet beneath all of it was a deep interior life. He was a man of prayer. His energy came from his relationship with God.

He died in 1680 after many years of faithful service. His legacy continues through the devotions he promoted and the communities he founded.

Virtues to Learn

What His Life Means for Us

St. John Eudes reminds us that faith is not only about knowledge. It is about the heart. It is possible to know many things about God and still feel distant from Him. John Eudes invites us to move from knowing to loving.

His focus on the hearts of Jesus and Mary gives a simple but powerful direction. If we want to grow spiritually, we begin by receiving God’s love and allowing it to shape our own hearts. From there, everything else follows. Our words change. Our reactions soften. Our priorities become clearer.

His life also shows the importance of formation. Growth in faith does not happen automatically. It requires guidance, effort, and openness. This can look like regular prayer, spiritual reading, confession, or simply making space for God in daily life.

For Catholic women, his message is very practical. The heart is where daily life is lived. It is where patience is tested, where love is given, where decisions are made. When the heart is rooted in Christ, even ordinary moments become meaningful.

He also reminds us that we are called to influence others, not through control, but through example. A peaceful, faithful, and loving presence can guide others more than many words.

His concern for those who were struggling, especially women in difficult situations, also speaks to today’s world. He did not define people by their past. He saw their dignity and their potential for renewal.

This invites us to look at others with the same perspective. Not with judgment, but with hope.

St. John Eudes shows that real change begins inside the heart and then moves outward.
