Hermit, Founder, and Man of Radical Trust
1416–1507
St. Francis of Paola was born in southern Italy and from a young age felt drawn to a life of prayer and penance. He chose to live as a hermit, dedicating himself completely to God in silence and simplicity.
As his holiness became known, others gathered around him, and he eventually founded the Order of Minims. The name "Minims" reflects his desire to be the least of all—living in humility, fasting, and total dependence on God.
He was known for miracles, wisdom, and spiritual guidance. Even kings sought his counsel, including the King of France, whom he served with humility while remaining detached from power and status.
Despite recognition, he remained deeply committed to a life of poverty, prayer, and penance, always pointing others toward God.
His life shows that true greatness is found not in recognition, but in humility and complete surrender to God.
St. Francis desired to be the least of all. He teaches us to let go of pride and live with a humble heart.
He practiced strict penance. He reminds us that self-denial can strengthen our relationship with God.
He relied completely on God for everything. His life shows us how to trust God without fear.
Even when surrounded by influence, he remained detached. He teaches us to seek God above all things.
St. Francis of Paola reminds us that holiness often grows in hidden places. His life began in solitude, yet its impact reached far beyond what he could have imagined.
He shows that deep prayer and sacrifice can transform not only our own hearts, but the world around us.
His example is especially meaningful for those seeking a deeper spiritual life, simplicity, or freedom from worldly attachments.
St. Francis encourages us to seek God first, to live simply, and to trust that God will work through our faithfulness.
“St. Francis of Paola, help me to live with humility and trust in God above all things.”
