Capuchin Preacher, Martyr, and Defender of the Faith
1577–1622
St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen was born Mark Rey in Germany. Before becoming a priest, he studied law and worked as a lawyer, earning a reputation for honesty, fairness, and concern for the poor.
Over time, he became disillusioned with corruption in the legal profession and felt called to give his life more completely to God. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans and took the name Fidelis, meaning faithful.
As a Capuchin priest, he became known for powerful preaching, strict discipline, and deep compassion. He served the poor, visited the sick, and encouraged people to return to Christ with sincere hearts.
During a time of religious conflict in Europe, he was sent to preach and strengthen the Catholic faith. His mission was difficult and dangerous, but he continued with courage and charity.
St. Fidelis was eventually attacked and killed for his faith. He is remembered as a martyr who remained faithful to Christ in both word and action.
St. Fidelis lived up to his name by remaining loyal to Christ until death. He teaches us to stay faithful in every season of life.
He preached the Gospel despite danger and opposition. His life reminds us to stand firm when faith requires bravery.
As a lawyer, he sought justice and rejected corruption. He shows us that holiness includes honesty in work and daily responsibilities.
He served the poor and sick with compassion. St. Fidelis reminds us that truth must always be joined with love.
St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen reminds us that faithfulness is not only shown in dramatic moments, but also in ordinary choices to live with honesty, charity, and courage.
His life bridges two worlds: the courtroom and the pulpit. In both, he sought truth and justice, showing that every vocation can become a path to holiness when surrendered to God.
He also teaches that defending the faith should never be separated from love for souls. His preaching was bold, but his life was also marked by service and compassion.
St. Fidelis encourages us to live with integrity, to speak truth with charity, and to remain faithful to Christ even when discipleship is difficult.
“St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen, help me to remain faithful to Christ with courage, integrity, and love.”
