St. Anselm was a Benedictine monk, philosopher, and Archbishop of Canterbury. He is one of the great thinkers of the Church and is known for his desire to understand faith more deeply.
He is famous for the phrase “faith seeking understanding,” which expresses his belief that faith comes first, and then we grow in understanding through reason and reflection.
St. Anselm wrote important theological works that explored the nature of God, the meaning of redemption, and the relationship between faith and reason.
As archbishop, he also faced conflict with political authorities, defending the freedom of the Church and remaining faithful to truth despite opposition.
He is honored as a Doctor of the Church for his wisdom, clarity, and contribution to Christian thought.
