St. André Bessette

Humble Brother of Holy Cross and Apostle of St. Joseph

1845–1937

Who Was St. André Bessette?

St. André Bessette was born Alfred Bessette in Quebec, Canada, and grew up in poverty after losing both of his parents at a young age. Though he had little formal education and struggled with fragile health for most of his life, he developed a deep love for God and an extraordinary trust in St. Joseph.

He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross as a brother and was assigned humble duties, especially as a doorkeeper at Notre Dame College in Montreal. What seemed like a hidden life became a powerful witness of holiness. Through simple kindness, prayer, and great faith, Brother André welcomed the sick, the poor, and the troubled, encouraging them to turn to St. Joseph for help.

Many people reported physical and spiritual healings after his prayers. Brother André always insisted that any grace received came from God through the intercession of St. Joseph, never from himself. His humility remained constant even as crowds grew and devotion around him spread.

He is especially remembered for inspiring the construction of Saint Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, which became one of the world’s great places of pilgrimage. Canonized in 2010, St. André Bessette remains a beloved example of hidden holiness, compassion, and unwavering faith.

Virtues to Learn

Humility

St. André never sought attention or praise. Even when people admired him, he pointed everything back to God and St. Joseph. His life teaches us that true greatness often grows in quiet service.

Trust in God

Despite weakness, poverty, and limitations, he trusted that God could work through even the smallest acts of faith. His example reminds us that God does not require worldly strength, but a willing heart.

Compassion

He welcomed suffering people with patience and tenderness. St. André shows us how to care for others not only through words, but through prayer, presence, and mercy.

Spiritual Significance

St. André Bessette’s life speaks powerfully to anyone who feels overlooked, weak, or unimportant. He did not become holy because he had influence, wealth, or academic achievement. He became holy because he loved God deeply and remained faithful in ordinary tasks.

His devotion to St. Joseph is one of the most beautiful parts of his legacy. He believed that St. Joseph cared for the Church and for every soul who turned to him with confidence. Through this devotion, St. André helped countless people rediscover hope and trust in divine providence.

He also reminds us that healing is not only physical. Many who came to him received peace, courage, repentance, and renewed faith. His witness encourages us to bring our burdens to God, to pray with simplicity, and to believe that grace is still at work in everyday life.
